Elms Cottages, Eynsham

Welcome Homelinkers - here's some information about us and our house.

We live in a pretty terraced cottage in Eynsham built in 1848 as farm-workers' houses. Although it's in the middle of the village, it is very quiet - no roads go past it. The main noise problem is the birdsong in the early summer mornings.

Eynsham is an unusual village - it has no supermarket, but a range of old-fashioned but modern local shops, many selling local food - click here for more. It is very friendly - with a strong sense of community.

During 2009 we tried to reduce our carbon footprint in several different ways - most noticeably by installing photovoltaic panels on our roof (click here for more). So at least during the summer we generate all our own electricity,

Inside there is a large living room with stone fireplace, and an oak open staircase leading to two bedrooms and bathroom. We have a cottage-style kitchen and a glass-roofed dining room extension.

We are two people - both retired. Our house sleeps 3 (the 2nd bedroom is actually a double, but we think the house is a bit small for 4 people - especially if it's bad weather).

We can exchange our car too. And we can often do non-simultaneous exchanges.

We are experienced exchangers, and everyone who has come to our house has loved our house and the community we live in.

our ideal exchange

2010
We're looking for a 2-week exchange in France, northern Spain, or Italy - preferably in a house big enough to sleep 6. Otherwise, a house to sleep two would do !

We are also interested in week-long exchanges in Europe (especially France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy) - not too hilly - we want to go on cycle rides ! Also long week-ends in Britain or western Europe (close to cheap trains or ferryports)

We can easily do non-simultaneous exchanges for short periods in the summer (we have a comfortable caravan, and also good friends with spare beds, and we are often away).

We prefer not to fly - we've done a lot of travelling our time, and now we are trying to reduce our carbon footprint.

We have all modern appliances except a microwave. There is cable TV, wifi broadband, and use of computer. Click here for more about the house.

We have a small cottage garden with patio - (we grow our vegetables on an allotment about half a mile away). Click here for more about us.

Our house is in the centre of Eynsham - an attractive village 6 miles from Oxford - click here for map (zoom 9 shows Eynsham in relation to London - zoom 1 shows our street). Eynsham is a large (5,000 people) thriving village with all necessary shops, and several particularly good ones (people come from Oxford to shop in them), and lots of pubs. Almost all shops and pubs are within 5 minutes walk of our house. The Eynsham Community Website, which Adrian runs, has a lot of information about shops, pubs, historty, maps, buses and almost everything else.

There is a very frequent bus service to Oxford and Witney (both 5 miles) - every 15 mins during the day, every half-hour in the evening, till late.

There is a very extensive Website for Eynsham, which tells you a lot about the actual village.

There are good walks nearby along the banks of the river Thames, and beautiful rolling countryside in the Cotswolds to the north and the Berkshire Downs to the south;

- if you go to the Travel page on the Eynsham Community Website, you get links to other sites about nearby attractions and the Cotswolds (with beautiful photos)

- if you go to the Links page, there are several very good links for Oxford

- if you go to the What's On page, there are links to films, theatres, concerts, etc in Oxford and nearby other towns.

London is 70 miles, and there are 2 separate buses from Oxford to London every 15 minutes till late - journey time 90 mins.

Eynsham is very close to the geographical centre of England - almost everywhere of interest in the south of England is within 3 hours drive - eg Stratford on Avon (1 hr), Bath (90 mins), Stonehenge (90 mins), Cheltenham (45 mins), Brighton (2 hrs 30 mins), Bristol (90 mins) Cardiff (2 hrs).
