The Glacier Ride

our guides - the baquianos

The following day our horses returned across the pampas at a gallop, herded by the Baquianos Chechin, Pato and Jose. The previous evening we had secured our reins under the stirrup leathers and behind the cantle and with a whistle from Chechin they had taken themselves home, about 5 miles to the Estancia where they were untacked and turned loose. This morning's gang were slightly different from the previous days - when enquiring about the whereabouts of a particular animal the reply came that he or she just hadn't shown up that morning. Was that a reflection on our riding?

The Estancia had about 70 horses so we could change tired horses for fresh ones on the occasions that we were within a reasonable distance. We were also able to pick up the pack horses which would carry our tents, camping gear, food and personal items as we penetrated deeper into the park where a support vehicle could not get to us.
